Göte II – grounding in Gothenburg archipelago

Summary in English

On August 21, 2024, the fireboat GÖTE II departed from Tångudden in Gothenburg, Västra Götaland County. The purpose of the voyage was to conduct navigation exercises and subsequently refuel with diesel at Styrsö.

During the voyage, an audible alarm in the waterjet system connected to the helm console was triggered. The captain adjusted the course with a portside turn of the wheel and simultaneously attempted to acknowledge the alarm but lost control of the vessel. The crew attempted to regain control, however the vessel continued turning to port. Shortly thereafter, the vessel ran aground at a speed of approximately 16 knots.

During the grounding, one crew member was thrown around in the wheelhouse and injured. The vessel sustained substantial damage.

Causes of the accident

The accident was caused by deficiencies in the shipping company's safety management system and training, which resulted in the crew lacking sufficient knowledge of the maneuvering system. The design of the wheelhouse impeded safe navigation.

Maintenance shortcomings contributed to the incident.

Safety recommendations

Given the measures already implemented by the Greater Gothenburg Rescue Service, there is not sufficient ground for the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) to issue any safety recommendations.
