Very serious maritime accident at Torshamnen in Gothenburg

A smaller work boat would moor between two pillars under a low bridge at Torshamnen in Gothenburg. The driver approached at low speed and was to stop and get the stern to starboard. When the reverse gear was to be engaged, the transmission between throttle control and reverse gear broke, with the forward gear remaining in place, this meant that the effect was the exact opposite. Instead of slowing down and getting the stern to starboard, the speed increased and the boat made a sharp turn. One person got stuck between the boat's wheelhouse and the bridge span and was fatally injured.
