Other accidents or serious incidents
Since 1990 SHK also investigates serious accidents and incidents regarding road traffic as well as all other kinds of serious accidents or incidents.
Examples of other accidents and incidents include building construction, mining, fires, chemicals, nuclear materials, or medical technology. The Swedish Transport Agency has the role of regulator and supervisory authority for road transports. The Swedish Contingency Agency (Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap, MSB) has the oversight responsibility in a number of other sectors.
Examples of yet other supervisory bodies are The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket), The Social Care Inspectorate (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg, IVO) and The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen). Also the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) has the role of supervisory body in many contexts.
When it comes to road traffic and other serious accidents and incidents, SHK only investigates occurrences in Sweden. As a general rule when it comes to road traffic, SHK only investigates commercial or public transportation events.
Accidents and incidents shall be investigated if:
several persons have been killed or seriously injured;
- substantial damage has been caused to property or the environment, or
- if there was a high probability of such a serious accident happening.
- For both accidents and incidents in this field there is an additional requirement namely that there are important safety lessons to be learned from an investigation.
SHK may also investigate:
- less serious accidents and incidents if there are important safety lessons to be learned from an investigation.
